License (BSL 1.1)¶
Azothedge Pulse is distributed under the Business Source License 1.1 (BSL 1.1). This page summarizes what that means in practice and then embeds the full, authoritative license text.
In brief¶
BSL 1.1 is source-available, not OSI open source. You can read, copy, modify, and self-host the code, and you can use it freely for development, testing, and non-production work. What it restricts is a specific competitive production use — until a fixed future date, after which the restriction lifts entirely. It is the same model used by projects such as MariaDB MaxScale, Sentry, and CockroachDB.
Change Date: 2030-05-21. Change License: Apache 2.0. On the Change Date (or four years after a given version is first published, whichever comes first), that version automatically re-licenses to the Apache License 2.0 — a permissive OSI open-source license. From that point the BSL restrictions no longer apply to that version.
Additional Use Grant. Pulse's license grants you production use, with one carve-out: you may not offer Pulse to third parties on a hosted or embedded basis in order to compete with Azothedge's paid, substantially-similar commercial CDP offering. In other words — run it in production for your own organization freely; don't resell it as a competing managed CDP service before the Change Date.
Practical implications for commercial users. For the overwhelming majority of adopters — companies running Pulse to power their own customer-data workloads — BSL 1.1 behaves like a permissive license today, and becomes Apache 2.0 in 2030 regardless. The only parties who need a commercial arrangement before then are those who would offer a competing hosted CDP built on Pulse.
